The launch of the first Islamic radio play titled "The Ring" took place on Sunday 21 January at 16h30. This was a momentous occasion for Radio 786 - it was the FIRST radio station in South Africa to produce and broadcast an Islamic radio play which was digitally edited on computer. Three plays were produced and broadcast on Radio 786. The plays "The Ring", "Orchard Keeper" and "The Noisy Neighbour" were written in Arabic by an Egyptian, Ali Ahmed Bakathir and translated into English by Drs Yasien Mohammed of the Department of Arabic Studies at the University of the Western Cape (South Africa). The production and broadcast of these plays has resulted in a Radio Play Competition. Local writers in South Africa have been invited to write their own plays - the best three plays will be produced and broadcast on Radio 786.
